In the field of podiatry, onychomycosis, also referred to as toenail fungus, could initially appear to be a minor cosmetic issue. Health professionals are now cautioning, nevertheless, that ignoring this seemingly unimportant matter could result in serious health problems.
Podiatrist Dr. Peter Joseph of Allegheny Health Network highlights the possible dangers of leaving toenail fungus untreated. He issues a warning that the effects go beyond cosmetics and can include a range of health problems, beginning with discomfort during daily activities.
The foot pain brought on by the infected nail’s thickness and deformity as the fungus grows is one of the main issues. It can get difficult to walk, especially with shoes on. In addition, Athlete’s foot, which is characterised by red, itchy, and cracked skin, can result from untreated toenail fungus. The fungus thrives in the warm, wet environment found within shoes, which aids in the fungus’s proliferation.
Dr. Joseph also draws attention to the possibility of a widespread infection, which is extremely dangerous, particularly for people with weakened immune systems like diabetics. Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that can be dangerous if left untreated. The fungus can infiltrate the skin and cause diseases like this. Infections can even reach the bloodstream in severe cases.
Another problem linked to toenail fungus is onycholysis, or the detachment of the toenail from the nail bed. If conventional therapies fail, it may occasionally be required to remove the injured portion of the nail or even avulse the entire nail.
Dr. Joseph advises people to seek medical attention as soon as they see any symptoms of a fungal infection in their toenails, stressing the value of prompt management. To confirm the fungus’s presence, a small toenail sample is analysed as part of the diagnosis process. Antifungal medications can be taken orally or used topically, and both have negligible side effects.
In less severe cases that don’t hurt, some medical professionals might decide to wait it out and track the infection’s development on the infected nail. The fungus might not become worse, but it also might not vanish on its own. In certain cases, a tiny dose of medication may be suggested to alleviate cosmetic issues.
The main point is that toenail fungus is a serious condition that should not be taken lightly. Maintaining general foot health and preventing complications and discomfort require early diagnosis and efficient treatment. People are advised to consult medical professionals right away if they think they may have a fungal infection in their toenails.
