Delta Burke’s Husband Loves Her After 33 Years—He Didn’t Give Up Sickness or Weight Gain
On their second date, Gerald McRaney proposed to Delta Burke. His friends opposed their relationship, but they persisted. He has loved her and taken her on dates for 33 years.

Gerald McRaney, star of “Major Dad,” knew he had one shot to ask Delta Burke out. Burke guest-starred on “Simon Simon,” where they met. McRaney quickly asked her out.

He stated he’ll listen to anyone’s opinion on his performances, but he knows Burke is honest when she says something was nice or he can improve.


Burke agreed to a date, fortunately. McRaney loved her immediately. He proposed on their second date, believing they were a wonderful match.

Two years later, in 1989, they married. McRaney got the gal eventually. McRaney’s third marriage was Burke’s first. It lasted this time. He explained:

“I wouldn’t let her go. Competitors existed. I was moving in immediately since others were asking her out on dates.
The actor believed their marriage would succeed and loved them deeply. Some opposed the union. McRaney’s buddies warned him it would end poorly.

Such Friends…
McRaney’s buddies doubted. He dismissed their well-intentioned concern as paranoia. He always replied:

Why not? Only they comprehend this craziness. She does. I can phone her at 2 a.m. while on location. She knows.”

Both understood. Since they were both in the entertainment industry, they could advise each other when times were tough. They also tried to assist each other.
One cheers for the other. Burke was thrilled and nearly in tears when McRaney won a Primetime Emmy for “This Is Us.”

Burke Became Ill.
Burke’s life changed forever in 1998. Her mother got breast cancer after her grandmother died. After a dispute with “Designing Women” producers, she stopped acting.

The actress is glad her two closest friends survived cancer.

Her weight changed considerably during the show. She departed at her heaviest. Hypoglycemia exacerbated her weight gain. She lost weight again but struggled.
Dieting and years of unsuccessful hypoglycemia management caused type 2 diabetes. The actress first struggled to diagnose. Each doctor gave her the wrong answer:

I travelled often. Was exhausted. I felt ill. “I knew something was wrong, but nobody could tell me what,” Burke said. “Epstein-Barr was diagnosed. I knew. One doctor completed the right tests and diagnosed me with diabetes.”

She was also taking care of her ailing mother. Before her doctor told her she needed insulin therapy, she rarely ate well.
Burke’s mother and McRaney survived breast and lung cancer, respectively. Burke stated her spouse supported her throughout. He reminded her of her medication and nutrition.

Burke’s Marriage Now
Burke has managed her disease for years. Her caring spouse administers her insulin shots. With McRaney’s help, she’s happy using insulin:

He loved me while I was a house. He loved me through my ups and downs. He still believes my physique looks amazing, but I know it doesn’t!”

The actress is glad her two closest friends survived cancer. Burke and McRaney now walk together for exercise. She’s happy and enthusiastic about her rehabilitation.
The actress said she had no reservations about acting again. She enjoyed her laid-back life. Though he’d like to work with her again, her husband didn’t think she’d return to showbiz.

They acquired a house in Central Florida to move there. McRaney spends a lot of time with Burke while not retiring. They reared McRaney’s three kids from a previous marriage.
