The Bills said in a statement that Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after making a contact during the first quarter of the game on January 2. Hamlin brought down Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, stood up, and then collapsed to his back.
According to the Bills, medical personnel were able to restore Hamlin’s pulse on the field, and he was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s intensive care unit, where he remained on January 3.
The Bengals led the Bills 7-3 with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter when play was suspended.
The NFL made the unprecedented decision to postpone the game approximately one hour later, and the league announced on January 3 that the game would not be resumed during week 18.
Former Buffalo Bills player Eric Wood, who was present at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, told TODAY that the scenario was “unbelievable.”
