It was 1998, and their paths crossed at an art exhibition. Delia was a teacher with a passion for painting. Adrián was a young writer who expressed himself through poems and stories. Their lives were at very different stages, but they found something to talk about in the creative work they both loved.

That first meeting became the beginning of a friendship. In time, it would lead to a marriage marked by criticism, illness, and a shared commitment to art.

After the exhibition, Adrián and Delia stayed in touch through letters. Those exchanges gave them a way to share their thoughts and gradually get to know each other. Adrián kept the letters, preserving the words that had helped build their connection.

Over time, his feelings changed. According to the account reported by the Mirror, he eventually found the courage to tell Delia that he had fallen in love with her. He believed he had found the person with whom he wanted to share his life.

For about a year, they kept their relationship private. They met discreetly, spending time playing cards or sharing a drink. Their faith as Jehovah’s Witnesses also shaped their courtship; according to their account, its rules restricted them from being alone together in private.

Eventually, they decided to tell others about their relationship.

The response was difficult.

Their 45-year age difference drew criticism, and some people close to them opposed the relationship. Adrián’s father accepted it, but his mother struggled with it. Adrián later described attempts by others to separate them and said he believed some of the opposition came from jealousy.

To him, the difference in their ages did not change his feelings.

“I’ve never been ashamed of the age difference,” he told Infobae. “Honestly, I don’t notice it. And even though we’re 45 years apart, I go everywhere with her.”

He also said he had never been attracted to women his own age. As criticism continued, he remained certain that he wanted to be with Delia.

On March 18, 2005, they married.

The friendship that had begun at an art exhibition had become a shared life. Their wedding gave them a date they would return to every year—a reminder of the decision they had made together despite the objections around them. March 2025 marked 20 years since that day.

But the difficulties they faced were not limited to other people’s opinions.

In 2009, Delia endured a demanding period of ill health, undergoing eight procedures involving her hip, knee, eyes, and gallbladder. The series of operations brought new challenges into their marriage.

Later, she was hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat. During that admission, Adrián had to keep his distance, and the separation was painful for them both. Their account describes her subsequent recovery and the strength they found in remaining committed to each other through those experiences.

Throughout the changes in their lives, art continued to give them something to share.

At Delia’s exhibitions, Adrián brought his poems to life through his voice. In his books, her paintings accompanied his writing. The interests that had first given them a reason to talk became part of the work they created together.

Her brushstrokes and his words found a place beside one another.

Looking back, they described themselves as happy in the life they had built. Their story included family disagreements, public judgment, periods of secrecy, and serious health difficulties. It also included letters carefully kept, a marriage sustained over decades, and the continuing pleasure of creating something together.

For Adrián, those early letters remained a treasured part of that history. For both of them, the connection that began through art continued through the paintings, poems, and everyday moments they shared.

Years after that first exhibition, they were still contributing to each other’s work—Delia painting, Adrián writing, and each giving the other’s creativity a place in their own.
