I Found Something Strange on My Girlfriend’s Bathroom Floor — Then I Realized It Was Alive
It started as an ordinary evening, the kind of evening when nothing seems unusual enough to deserve a second thought.

I was at my girlfriend’s place, going about the evening as usual, when I stepped into her bathroom. I wasn’t looking for anything strange. I certainly wasn’t expecting to find something that would make me hesitate before walking barefoot into a bathroom again.

Everything seemed normal at first.

The familiar sink, the shower, the toilet, the slightly damp floor—nothing appeared out of place.

Then I noticed something near the floor.

It was small enough that I nearly ignored it.

At first glance, it looked like a dark piece of debris lying close to one of the damp areas of the bathroom. It wasn’t brightly colored or obviously recognizable. There was nothing about it that immediately screamed danger.

My first thought was simple: trash.

Maybe it was a small strip of rubber that had broken away from something. Perhaps it was part of a seal, a piece of packaging, or some random object that had fallen onto the floor without anyone noticing.

Bathrooms collect strange little things all the time.

A piece of wet tissue can become almost unrecognizable. A clump of hair can look surprisingly unsettling when soaked with water. Soap residue, lint, dirt from shoes, and material from drains can all create strange shapes on a wet floor.

So I almost walked away.

Almost.

But just as I was about to stop paying attention to it, something made me look again.

There was something about its shape that didn’t seem right.

I stopped.

Then I leaned forward slightly.

The object was dark, thick, and irregular. Its surface didn’t have the smooth, predictable appearance I would expect from rubber or plastic. Instead, it looked strangely organic.

The longer I stared at it, the less convinced I became that it was an ordinary piece of debris.

And then an uncomfortable thought entered my mind.

What If It Was Alive?
That possibility immediately changed the situation.

A second earlier, I had been looking at what I assumed was garbage.

Now I was wondering whether I was standing only a short distance away from a living creature.

I instinctively stepped backward.

For several seconds, I simply watched it.

Nothing happened.

That should have reassured me.

Instead, I found myself becoming even more suspicious.

I tried to tell myself that I was overthinking the situation. There was probably a perfectly ordinary explanation. Maybe water moving across the floor had made the object appear different. Maybe its strange texture was just the result of being wet.

But once the idea that it might be alive had entered my head, it was difficult to dismiss.

Suddenly, I didn’t just see an object on the floor.

I saw a mystery.

And the bathroom itself began to feel different.

Suddenly, Every Corner Looked Suspicious
I started looking around for clues.

My eyes went first to the drain.

If this thing really was alive, perhaps that was where it had come from.

I looked around the edges of the shower and then near the toilet. I checked underneath the sink and followed the lines of the pipes with my eyes. I even glanced upward toward the ceiling, as ridiculous as that might sound.

I wanted to understand how something like this could have appeared in an otherwise ordinary bathroom.

Had it crawled from somewhere?

Had it entered through the plumbing?

Had somebody unknowingly carried it inside?

Or had it been there longer than anyone realized?

Then came the question I really didn’t want to consider:

What if there were more?

That thought immediately made me uncomfortable.

I started inspecting the room more carefully.

Every shadow seemed darker than it had a few minutes earlier.

Every little mark near the drain deserved a second look.

Every damp corner suddenly seemed like a possible hiding place.

Nothing about the bathroom itself had actually changed, of course. It was still the same familiar room I had entered moments before.

What had changed was my perception of it.

That’s one of the strange things about discovering something unexpected in a familiar place.

Once your brain recognizes the possibility that something unusual is present, you start seeing the entire environment differently.
