On a peaceful Sunday morning, Officer Janet and her K9 companion Max arrived in the park’s parking lot for their normal walk.
They didn’t expect they would have to deal with any pressing problems because the day was just starting and the whole city seemed to be asleep.

Officer Janet and her dog didn’t see many people, but then they heard a boy screaming.
She turned around and saw a little kid, no older than five, standing at the playground gate and holding on to the bars tightly.
Janet knew the young boy was in trouble before she even got close to him because she didn’t want to watch that situation.
“Hello there, dear Are you all right? She wanted to know.

The child didn’t want to answer at first. Then he whispered something in a voice that was so soft and faint that she couldn’t understand what he was trying to say.
It was evident that the child was alone and there were no grownups around.
Max, who had been trained to search and rescue, stayed on guard. He wasn’t really at ease around kids, but this time he walked around the boy before putting his nose on his hand.
Max realized that something was awry. He noticed the kid was upset, so he knelt down next to him and prodded his backpack with his nose to attempt to make him feel better.
After a time, Max started barking, as if he wanted his wife to tell the kid to talk.
“Sweetie, you can tell me what’s wrong.” Janet said softly, “I’m here to help you with my friend Max.”

The child cried even more than before and said, “My mom won’t wake up!” I called her name, but she didn’t respond.
Officer Janet asked the boy if he knew where he lived and told him to show her the way.
The boy nodded and started to walk. Janet and Max followed closely behind. In the meanwhile, she asked for help, which may suggest there was an emergency.
When they finally got to the boy’s house, they found his mother passed out in bed. At least she was still alive, even if she was weak.

Right away, doctors and nurses came to help. They warned that even a few minutes of delay may have killed the woman.
She had a diabetic episode while she was sleeping, it turned out.
When Janet feared the boy was missing, Max sensed there was more to the story than she thought. He knew he had to act immediately and spotted the signs of terror that saved a life that day.
