The 74-year-old Hollywood icon Richard Gere has played a variety of roles that show off the range of the actor’s skills. He moved into homelessness in one of these professions in 2014. At the time, not many people knew it was for a movie, much less that Gere was in it. Years later, the old media that presents him in character still astounds our AmoMama readers. Walking the streets of New York City, Gere was completely unrecognizable to the average person. For over forty minutes, no one gave me any attention. I was in one of the busiest districts in New York. “I wouldn’t have lasted 30 seconds if I had been there,” Richard Gere famously remarked. In other pictures, the “Runaway Bride” actress is seen sporting an olive-colored pair of slacks, a long-sleeved shirt, a beige scarf, and a charcoal beanie.
Gere was also spotted in several pictures sitting next to actor Ben Vereen, who played a different homeless man in the movie. Moreover, Gere was wearing a somewhat dirty raincoat.Additional media portrays the performer walking about with plastic bags in his hands. In these photos, a few onlookers saw Gere go past them while the film was being filmed. Most people didn’t know at the time that Gere was playing George, a father who wanted to heal his broken relationship with his daughter Maggie, who was represented by Jena Malone.
At the homeless men’s shelter known as “Bellevue Hospital,” George makes friends with a patient who helps him try to patch things up with his daughter. Gere played this part in the movie “Time Out of Mind.” Readers of AmoMama who have watched our most recent throwback post of the iconic scene are still in shock that the homeless man was actually Gere, even years after his name was made public. A reader remarked, “I never would have recognized him.” And someone else exclaimed, “Whoa! He was, I seem to remember, in the classic movie “Pretty Woman.” Many others voiced their shock at Gere’s portrayal of George as well as their comment that it highlighted the seriousness of the homelessness problem in society.”Impressive. Still, I’m not shocked. That’s New York City to you. It’s depressing, though. Very depressing! “, a Facebook reader commented. “OMG,” said another, expressing a similar viewpoint.if it’s true 😔. It’s awful, I don’t know what Hollywood is doing to these folks 😢. Amazing, said another, praising Gere’s acts. I appreciate that he looked at OUR SOCIETY. A generous French mother saw Gere and gave him food when the movie was still being filmed and others still saw him as simply another homeless man living on the streets.Unaware that Gere was an actor playing a homeless guy for a movie, Karine Gombeau observed him rummaging through a garbage can near Grand Central Terminal when she and her family were traveling from Paris to New York.
Shocked by what she saw, Gombeau decided to give Gere some of the leftovers from a huge pizza that she, her husband, and their child had ordered from a restaurant. How much is in the bag? Gere approached the “Unfaithful” talent with the pizza in hand and asked.Gombeau recalls trying to answer in English but finally using her mother tongue, French, in addition to English. “I said, ‘Je suis désolée [I am sorry], but the pizza is cold,” the French guest acknowledged. “I really appreciate it,” he remarked. God bless you,” said Gombeau. Two days later, when Gombeau received a story copy of Gere’s nice deed, written by The Post, she discovered that Gere was only acting out the homeless image. She stated that a member of the Salisbury Hotel staff, where she was staying at the time, gave her the item.To her surprise, Gombeau saw a photo of herself with Richard Gere in the composition. It was charmed. This is a ridiculous story. That something like this could happen is unreal,” she’d said before.
